Walther Ppk Release - It is so beautiful. It looks great on the big screen. But compared to more modern handguns, the Walther PPK is a poor choice for self-defense and concealment. It's not even a joke. If you're not a collector or a James Bond fan, there are much better options.

It is historically important. And, of course, she's best known for her dealings with British government employees in soft psychological fiction. But I feel compelled to make this video because I know that somewhere right now there is someone who wants to buy a gun for personal defense or learn how to shoot. Perhaps this will be their first purchase of weapons of this period. And for whatever reason, the Walther PPK is at the top of their list. If so, then maybe that's where the Walther PPK 2021 comes in. Yes, that's just a perception, but one shared by those who shoot really seriously. Today I want to talk about why.

Most of the guns that Walther makes today are considered really expensive. They even make a pair that I call particularly good. And like many German-designed weapons, when the PPK first came out, it fell into that particular category. It is a special high-quality pistol that plays an important role. But in the last 90 years, there have been some significant advances in design and technology that go into concealed weapons. I'm not going to carry a handgun today that hasn't changed much since 1931 any more than I would rely on a 1931 car as a daily driver.
The PPK was originally marketed to European law enforcement as a smaller version of the Walther PP or "Police Pistol". PPKs are available in .22 LR, .32 ACP and .380 ACP. Today we usually associate it with the .380, but first the .32 was actually the most common chambering.
Long before the PPK appeared in any spy movie or book, it was already making a big impression on the arms industry. The PPK was among the first commercially successful double-action / single-action pistols. It features many mechanical and aesthetic design elements that have been repeated and reused over the decades by both Walther and their competitors.
It was also the first semi-automatic to really define the size category we now call "compact." It's smaller than a utility-sized device or even a pistol. But it's also bigger than what used to be called a vest pistol. It's thin and stealthy, but has plenty of syllables to shoot.
The Walther Ppk: Still A Good Carry Gun
PPK didn't gain much traction in the United States until GIs started bringing them home from Europe after World War II. They were pretty popular for a few years after the war and the PPK will probably fade into history soon and I won't have to make this video. But then came several movies about women who were secret spies, and the need for PPK has continued ever since.
Unfortunately for those who like to play the American Secret Service comedy, the Gun Control Act of 1968 banned the importation of certain concealed carry pistols, including the PPK. Walther had to slightly expand its grip to meet the new "sporting purpose" requirements. This variant is known as the PPK/S. Since the 1970s, a number of different companies have imported the PPK/S. Both the PPK / S and original PPK models are also manufactured and sold here in the United States under license. The quality of those weapons has been under attack or neglected for years.
As of 2018, Walther has been manufacturing PPKs at their United States factory in Fort Smith, Arkansas. For the most part, these new weapons aren't too different from the originals. They have some fixes to make them a bit safer and more reliable. The claw or tail of the tail is slightly longer. The adjustable dovetail rear sight has been replaced by a simpler fixed level rear sight. Now only produced in .380 ACP. Otherwise, it's pretty much the same pistol that Walther first introduced in 1931.
It would be easier for me to explain why the Walther PPK is better if I use a modern pistol for comparison. I will use the Glock 42 for it. It's a good pistol, but it's not really the best choice. It's just one of dozens of options that are better than PPK. I chose this particular pistol because it has a similar external size to the PPK and has the same shooting capability and the same cartridge: 6 + 1 .380 ACP cartridges. In all other respects, except for the Glock 42 beauty contest, it completely outperforms the PPK.

Let's start with an easy one: weight. The PPK has a metal slide and a steel frame. Most pistols today have an aluminum or polymer material frame. The iron weapon is heavy. And despite what Boris the Blade tells you, that doesn't make them any more reliable or durable than the light option. The fully loaded PPK weighs 24 ounces. The Glock 42 weighs less than a third at 16.5 ounces. That's a noticeable difference for something you carry around your waist for several hours a day.
You might think that heavier weights are a good thing in a pistol. It will probably help absorb some of that reaction and make the impact smoother. Unfortunately, this is not the case. PPK has what is called a counterattack. The Glock 42, along with most modern pistols, was reworked. I will not go into the details of all the meanings. To learn more, I made a detailed video a few years ago. In general, straight blow guns feel more agitated than reloadable guns.
So even though the PPK is quite heavy and the .380 printer case is light, the Walther feels like a modern 9mm pistol. It's manageable, but not something I'd put in the hands of an inexperienced shooter. The .22 and .32 versions of the PPK are said to be more enjoyable to shoot, but those copies are no longer sold in the United States. Used copies can be terribly expensive.
What really makes the .380 PPK unpleasant to shoot is actually the combination of fast recoil and poor ergonomics. The proper way to carry a modern rifle is with the main hand reticle as high as possible on the back line as much as you can. Strong grip and aggression are key to controlling spin. However, if you catch PPK this way, you will most likely end up with what is known as a sliding bite. This is where the slide cuts or touches the thumb as the gun rotates. After less than 100 rounds in compliance with the PPK, I ended up with not only a slider bite, but ... I don't know what you call it, beaver tail bite? The angle of the beaver or tang tail here is so sharp that it cuts my arm second only to the slip bite.

The reason PPKs later had this extended point to begin with was to address complaints of hammer bite. But overall, the PPK remains an ergonomic disaster. There are sharp edges and corners everywhere. There is zero quality on the front line. The mag release is in the rough spot. Either the mag release or the safety / decocker is uneven.
After wrestling with the PPK, shooting a Glock 42 is like diving into a clear blue lake on a very hot day. It has decreased by about half. Nothing startled or frightened me. It never felt like work to practice with. I'm not saying that ergonomics is perfect for everyone. It might not be good if you have big hands. Could use a stronger grip structure. Slide releases are non-contradictory. But at least there is a slide show, which PPK lacks. For most people, it's just a fun little gun to shoot. PPK is not.
