Thanks to its association with Hollywood and the image it portrays, this gun might just be one of the most famous guns in the world. While it might make James Bond look cool, is it something you really want to carry? In this Walther PPK review, we will discover and take a closer look at this unique pistol steeped in history.
When most people hear the word "Walter PPK", they think of the famous fictional spy - James Bond. Less well known is that PPK existed nearly 30 years before James Bond took over.
Walther Ppk Reliability
The Walther PPK was originally built in Germany in the 1930s. A larger pistol (Walther PP- Police Pistol) developed in 1929 was the basis for the PPK. Walter designed the PPK with undercover police work in mind. They scaled down the original Walther PP to make it happen. Few, if any, options at the time were compact enough to hide. That's why Walter claims they "invented concealed carry."

Production of PPK (and the PP series) has changed location and manufacturer over the years. Starting in 1930, Walter produced PPK in Germany until 1952, when production began to move outside the country for political reasons. Production finally moved to the United States in 1978, with European production continuing until 1986. Smith & Wesson began license production of the PPK and PPK/S from 2002 to 2013. Walther Arms resumed PPK production in Arkansas in 2018. device.
The PPK was produced primarily in .380 ACP, with some models offered in .32 ACP, .22LR, and .25 ACP. The model I tested for this review was the most common type - the .380 ACP.
As soon as I opened the Walther PPK case, the aesthetics of the gun fooled me. The look and feel of the PPK is hard to compare to many other handguns on the market. I must say that the PPK feels solid in the hand.
PPK grip and fire are unique. The weight and overall build quality stood out to me - especially for such a compact gun.
Range Report And Review: Walther Ppk
After firing a few hundred rounds through the gun, I was a bit lost on confirming the "feel", but I was still happy with it. It's a small frame gun with a 1930's design - I knew it wouldn't be the most comfortable gun in the world to shoot. The PPK handled various types of ammunition without any problems and felt quite accurate when shooting. I shot the PPK mostly from 10 yards to simulate a self-defense scenario and felt safe.
While I don't see myself consistently carrying the PPK as a concealed carry pistol, the combination of overall size and proficient performance makes it worth considering in my opinion.
I had a few complaints about my experience driving the PPK, but I'll touch on those a bit further down in my review. Overall, the PPK performed as I expected and shined in the looks and charisma department.
The Walther PPK pickup and grip give you a short, weak 1911 "feel". The frame makeup and grip are somewhat similar to that of a typical 1911-style pistol. It really fits nicely in the hand and gives you confidence when shooting the bullet. proof view.
The “made In The Usa” Walther Ppk/s Is Back 1
When doing this review (and before shooting the PPK) I expected the PPK to be quite rough on the hands, but I found it to be quite comfortable. The back strap allows for a high and secure grip with the dominant hand. The only issue with the size of the frame was the length of the grip. The PPK I tested included a magazine with and without a light grip extender. The grip extender provided a nice length to the grip, but I still prefer guns with longer grips and perhaps more capacity.
It is a weapon that can be easily concealed and carried comfortably by almost anyone. Of course, an underarm shoulder holster would be the ideal configuration if you're trying to keep history alive.
Let's face it, 6 rounds of .380 ACP ammo isn't much firepower - especially by today's standards. Most guns of this caliber and capacity are only intended for discreet concealed carry and as "get rid of me" guns. Given the original production history and the general development of the gun world, the capacity makes sense.
Most of the popular pistols produced at that time were 6 revolvers - comparable in terms of firepower.
The New Walther Ppk Is Made In The Usa
I would imagine that the overall weight would be one aspect of the PPK that discourages shooters from carrying it concealed. At 1.28lbs the holster definitely pushes the scale in terms of people being comfortable carrying it around on their backs - although I'm sure many do. On a positive note, after firing the sixth round, you'll still have a "brick" that can make a decent shell. Ballistic data will vary depending on the strength and athleticism of the user.
As an important feature of any gun, I wanted to make sure I touched on the sights here. The PPK sights have been pretty decent in my experience and I've had very few problems using them. The design of three fixed columns, painted in red, front and back, allows for simple aiming.
As you can see from the photo I have provided below, they are a little on the small side. However, size did not adversely affect performance. The red color on the front and rear sights looked good when shooting. I believe most shooters will find these sights sufficient unless the PPK is something you're actually hiding. In this case, adding a bright color to the mirrors can be a worthwhile investment.
The Walther PPK trigger is a unique experience because it is a true DA/SA (double action/single action). When you first pull the trigger, it will cock the trigger and then release the hammer. Each subsequent round in the magazine will be fired in a single shot, as the sliding recoil actuates the hammer after each shot.

My trigger pull test showed 2.6 pounds in single action mode on the PPK I tested. According to Walther Arms, the double pull weight is 13.4 pounds. The PPK trigger really stood out compared to some popular .380 ACP pistol triggers on the market. For example, the Ruger LCP, LCP II, and Glock 42 have what I consider "less than ideal". In my opinion, the triggers on the pistols listed were rough and heavy. However, the PPK trigger was relatively smooth and light.
It is possible to pre-activate the PPK with the safety lever off. This allows for single action only shooting without the dreaded 13lb + initial trigger pull. Obviously, the double take is long and heavy, but with a sharp reset, the break is quite predictable. The trigger doesn't move that much in a single action and the pull feels very light. A nice crisp break is noticeable in the single action as well.
The Walther PPK is simple to operate, but also a little unique - just what I'd expect from a classic like this.
One feature I found somewhat inconvenient was the magazine release. Depending on the location, I found it difficult to reach it comfortably. I have average sized hands and usually don't have this problem - even with larger guns.
Walther Ppk/e Introduction
There is no built-in slide release and the slide works on a manual basis for the rotating cam. While I don't have a problem with the idea, I could see the benefit of something like a more textured grip on the front of the slide to help.
Loading magazines into the magazine well of the PPK is somewhat difficult. I would imagine that after hours of practice you could master reloading with a PPK, but the design won't do you any favors. Not only is the slot slightly thinner, but the magazine must be at the right angle to slide freely.
Security is different, but managed. The slide safety looks a little odd, but seems reasonable considering the overall size of the gun. I was able to activate the security without any problems.
As I always try to do in gun reviews, I tested the muzzle velocity with the LabRadar Doppler radar. I used Barnes TAC-XPD 80 Grain ammo for testing. Barnes advertises a muzzle velocity of 990 feet per second on this round. 4 inch barrel '.
